Shadow

Some definitions…

: partial darkness or obscurity within a part of space from which rays from a source of light are cut off by an interposed opaque body

: a reflected image

: shelter from danger or observation

: an inseparable companion or follower

: pervasive and dominant influence

Looking at these definitions from the dictionary I wonder what David was saying in the 23rd Psalm. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” Psalms‬ ‭23:4‬.

Surely death casts a shadow across all men’s path. It is appointed unto man once to die. I am going to cast a wrinkle here…the wages of sin are death which casts a shadow upon us and separation from His light, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ and his work of salvation. Therefore, through salvation we move into the light from the shadows of sin.

Upon salvation we are to live a life that is Christ like, or a reflection of Him. In doing this the world will see Christ in us.

Jesus said He will be with us until the end and I think there is no greater shelter than Him. He guards our hearts and lives against that day.

We have been made joint heirs with Jesus in all that God has to offer. As an heir He is my brother. A brother is one who will stand by you through thick and thin and has your back. So my brother is my inseparable companion as I follow Him.

Lastly…He should be a pervasive and dominant influence in our lives. His lead and direction is our path to follow. A man of love and peace drawing others to Him, but eyes burning and penetrating to the very soul of a sinner; yet somehow showing compassion to draw the sinner to repentance. All knowing and accepting.

Lord shadow me in all that I do. Protect, comfort, and guide me this day. Hold me as I follow you and may your image shine through my life today.
