He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother
Another song dissection…
The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows where
But I’m strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother
(Our journey following the Spirit’s lead is a long one. We can make the journey better with a companion, sometimes we must help them along and we (Christ in us) are strong enough to do it.)
So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We’ll get there
(I know we will make our destination and along the way, I only want the best for him.)
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother
(I can handle his load and it won’t slow me down, so we are moving along together.)
If I’m laden at all
I’m laden with sadness
That everyone’s heart
Isn’t filled with the gladness
Of love for one another
(My only sadness is that I see so many who are attempting the journey without a close brother. One who can help bare them up.)
It’s a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we’re on the way to there
Why not share
(This road will end at some point and it is unavoidable. While going down this path, why not find a brother with which to travel.)
And the load
Doesn’t weigh me down at all
He ain’t heavy he’s my brother
(Again, the load won’t slow me down at all.)
He’s my brother
He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother, he ain’t heavy
As this song says, we can carry our brother along the way. Paul also directs us to just that in Galatians.
“Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.” Galatians 6:1-3 NLT
So let us walk along with our brothers and sisters on this road to holiness. May we be available to help out, but even more may we be humble enough to allow them to assist us. God will put a person with us who will sharpen us as we sharpen them through the Spirit’s leading and prayer. Ask God to give you a special navigator…He will do that.
Here is an awesome version of this song.
