People who know me know that I love music. It has played a large role in my life. Having grown up in church, I have sung many hymns and praise songs. I also do have sung along with many country, pop, and rock songs on the radio as well as just listening to great instrumental music. Good music can pep a person up and change a person’s attitude and perspective. Some music can even bring a person down…I avoid that stuff.

Anyway, this old hymn by Civilla D. Martin in 1905 is in my head this morning.

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come, Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heav’n and home, When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He: His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain:

I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free, For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear, And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears; Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise, When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies, I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain

This song is based on Matthew 10:29-31..

“What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” Matthew‬ ‭10:29-31‬ ‭NLT‬‬

These words spoken by Christ are aimed directly at our cares and worries. God is concerned about us and desires all that is best for us. But we have some skin in this game as well.

First we must strive to live the life he wants us to live. There is an adage that says, if we take a step towards God, He will take steps towards us. In the book of James we also see:

“Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.” James‬ ‭4:8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

So God wants to live a life close to Him so He can be close to us.

Secondly w me must perform the act of not worrying. We are told many times in scripture that we are not to worry but focus on God and let Him take care of us.

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” 1 Peter‬ ‭5:7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew‬ ‭11:29‬ ‭NLT‬‬

These two verses tell us just how we should act toward the worries and cares of this life. If we can get out of our own way and release our issues into the Lord’s hands we can find the soothing care of His love and find true rest and peace.

So let us then be faithful in this part of our walk as well. Let’s turn our worries over to Him…I am not saying lip service, I mean truly surrender these to God; just like you have your life for salvation. He will soothe us and give us peace.

God, may we learn to release our concerns in this life over to you. Teach us how to find peace as we learn to lean on you and not ourselves. Remind us of your love and care as we walk this narrow way. All praise and glory to you and you alone, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
