When men are at war and on the front lines a person in each group is on watch while the others rest. They rotate so that each member gets rest and a level of protection is afforded them while they rest lest they be attacked and unaware be overrun.
In our spiritual walk we must also be on watch in our spirit man. Our flesh is at war with our spirit man and we must feed our spirit man with watchmen.
“For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12 NLT
The first watchmen is prayer. We must ask God to protect our spirit man and strengthen it to withstand the on slot of attacks that our enemy will throw at us.
“Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!” Matthew 26:41 NLT
Second is our study. We must study the word of God and good Christian teachings to fortify our position with weapons that our spirit man can use to shield us from attacks.
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV
Third is application of the word (plan for attacks). To properly weaken the attacks of our flesh we must meditate on God’s word, thinking about possible attacks and scriptures that can be used as a wall against the attacks.
“I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalms 119:11 NLT
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalms 119:105 NLT
A fourth watchmen is praise and worship. God is truly the only being worthy of our praise and utmost adoration. By giving him his just due of our praise we open a door in our heart to allow Him in to bless our spirit man.
“Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!” Psalms 103:1-5 NLT
These four spiritual watchmen must be strong and active in our lives if we hope to attain the righteousness of God and be more than conquerors.
“Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? (As the Scriptures say, ‘For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.’) No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.” Romans 8:35-37 NLT
God to you I lift my praise from a feeble and humble heart. May you be glorified in all the earth and your plans be made sure. I ask God that you continue to inspire my fervent chase after you and that I keep the watchmen in my life strong. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for your people. Be glorified oh Lord! In Jesus name, amen.
