The Empowered Leader: 10 Keys to Servant Leadership, Calvin Miller

A very thought provoking book about leadership and how we can see through King David’s life both failure and success in leading. How he used and leaned upon God for wisdom, patience, and forgiveness in all that he did.

The C. S. Lewis Signature Classics – C. S. Lewis

Book One – Mere Christianity
  Simply a classic read.
Book Two – Screwtape Letters and Screwtape Makes a Toast
Had never completed this book but had started a few times, interesting look into how the spiritual world may work behind the scenes.
Book Three – Miracles
Interesting book on proving the fact that Miracles can and do exist.
Book Four – The Great Divorce
Life after death does exist and if we have lived a good life we have a decision to bound to our past and live in a slummy realm or follow a spirit guide who will lead us on to our reward in paradise. Many are too scared to go with the guide to eternal bliss and are therefore lost forever, while others follow timidly to their reward. The divorce then is the separation of what we know to what we do not know. Divorced from life we can decide to be banished to an outcast state or live in paradise.
Book Five – The Problem of Pain
The author questions why we, as Christians, endure pain? Does God send us pain? Should non-Christians have more pain? Do we endure pain just to become stronger? Do animals sense pain the same way that man does? All of these questions are answered by the author to his point of view. Sin brought pain into the world and until we are removed from this sinful world we will have to endure pain, though God may assist the Christian with comfort.
Book Six – A Grief Observed
In the book the author is reviewing notes that he had jotted down during the period of grief following the loss of his wife to cancer. He reviews the notes and writes about what he must have been feeling at the time of the creation of the notes. The book is four chapters long and represents each of the four notebooks into which the author had jotted down his thoughts of grief. He ends the book with the Latin phrase, “Poi si torno all eterna fontana” which means “And then she returned to the Eternal Fount”, which are the last words of Dante’s Divine Comedy, when Beatrice returns to heaven.
Book Seven – The Abolition of Man
This book is about the emasculation of men and the lesson books used that do not continue the enhancement of the male.
Book Eight – The Four Loves
The author speaks of the different loves which exist in the world. Loves can be need-loves or gift-loves. A need love is defined as a longing within a person for the love, while a gift-love is a love freely given by a person. The four loves discussed are:

  • Affection – familial love
  • Friendship – common feelings shared between persons but not at a familial or intimate way
  • Eros – love between a man and a woman (the Venus) at the physical level
  • Charity – the ultimate gift love where an undeserving recipient is loved
